From what I can tell there are only 8 spots remaining.
Uruguay v Costa Rica to decide one (first leg played tomorrow avo NZ time with the second leg on the 18th).
Ireland v France (same deal as above, kicking off at Croke Park)
Portugal v Bosnia etc (starting in Lisbon)
Greece v Ukraine (starting in Athens)
Russia v Slovenia (starting in Moscow, wouldn't the Russians have been better off teeing this off in Vladivostok?)
and 3 spots left in Africa. There they are still in group play.
Either Cameroon or Gabon will go through from Pool A (Cameroon are away to Morocco and a win will see them there).
Either Tunisia or Nigeria will go through from Pool B (Tunisia are 2 points ahead of Nigeria but goals diff is the same +4 so they need a win over Mozambique because Nigeria should beat Kenya away)
And in Pool C Algeria should go through because they are 3 points up over Egypt and with a 4 goal advantage. But they are playing away in Egypt so a 3-0 win to Egypt would see them through.

That Egypt / Algeria match will be a tasty affair.
The Cameroon win won't be easy.
And in a funny way I want us to be in the same group as England.

Yep, either them or Aussie. Although personally I'd be happy if we are matched up with North or South Korea as well.
We could potentially beat or draw with Aussie or N Korea if all the stars aligned. And at least if S Korea beat us I'll still possibly have a team to support. But heck, imagine if England needed to beat us by 3 goals to go through and had Rooney sent off, a missed penalty and they only take it down 2-0. Dreams are free.

On a side note I see we are ranked 83.
But hosts South Africa are ranked 85 and North Korea 91. Everybody else is in the top 50.

Draw for the Pools at the WC will be made 7pm on Dec 4 in Cape Town.
Not sure if they will do it the same as last time but it's confusing as f**k.
They will likely seed the top 8 and then confine the other teams to the other pots depending on what areas they are from.
Last time the teams from South America, Africa and Oceania were in Pot B so we could be in there as the only Oceania qualifier.
Pot C was made up of all the unseeded European teams.
Pot D was made up with the CONCACAF teams North America + others and Asia.
So essentially if it is the same format the All Whites will get
a) One f**king awesome side
b) Us
c) A European team (hopefully a side that scrapped in)
d) and an Asian or North American/caribbean team
Ideal draw:
England
NZ
Ireland
South Korea

North Korea will be in the bottom pot too, so we won’t get them.
And we won’t get Australia either, because FIFA have got a machine that they borrowed from Duckworth / Lewis that takes all sorts of stuff into account.
Cameroon and Nigeria through, which is good. The sub-Sahara African sides are a lot better to watch than the Arab ones.
Egypt beat Algeria 2-0. One-off playoff on Wednesday in ... Sudan. Nice
Ireland/ France just started on ESPN.

Essentially they rank every team from 1 to 32.
They look at the two previous World Cup performances for each team and asign points. So for example in 1998 France were given 32 points, Brazil 31, Croatia 30, Netherlands 29 etc etc, with teams who weren't involved getting 0. They then look at your fifa ranking in a particular month for the 3 years prior to the comp. So for the 2006 tournmanet they took a snap shot look at Dec 2003, Dec 2004 and Dec 2005. And simply put the sides in order, highest ranked gets 32, next 31 and so on.
They take the world cup scores and average them.
Then take the fifa ranking scores and average them.
Then add them together to get a total.
The table for last time is here
We may not be seeded last with South Africa and N Korea currently ranked below us and neither of them were in the last WC. But we will definately get two teams who should cut us to bits and possibly one team we can target for a point or possibly better if the stars align.

I just noticed that South Africa get seeded as hosts. I hope we get in their pool because their team is absolute mud at the moment, hosts or not they are beatable. A bit like the draw we got against China in the Olympics on 'opening day'.

South Korea and Japan were also 1st seeds in 2002 WS; which was part of the reason for all the fun in that competition. Not their fault that France were pants, but it did mean England and Argentina ended up in the same pool.
Bet SA end up with the best 2nd tier team in their group, but I bet everyone will want to be in that one. When you think about it, SA massive underachievers in football.
We could easily get South Korea though.

Well what is certain is that New Zealand will be playing at least three games of football in the top echelon. Herberts got time to get the team ticking, Killeen needs work on his ball control work approaching the box, and some of the others gave away stupid passes last night and a better team than Bahrain will take capital of those mistakes.
The dream games for me for the All Whites - would have to be Italy, to see if Italia can get revenge on having three goals pushed past them.

Those world rankings are utter bollocks, and always have been.
I hope we avoid Australia, and end up as the minnow in the group of death.

One of the songs being sung near where I was last night went thus:
"You can stick your FIFA rankings up your arse ..."

Nice; you see the best chants are always the ones that don't appear on the printed sheets.
In retrospect, Bahrain lost this by going soft in the first leg. I'm starting to understand why us going second was another bit of luck.

Indeed LB - another one of the unscripted one was the one that went up late in the first half when the AW's were dominating - sung to the same tune as "Nothing rhymes with Ivan Vicelic" and directed at the visitors, it went:
"You're so sh*t it's unbelievable"

Any pool we end up in is automatically not a pool of death.
We will almost certainly be in the same pool as one out of Brazil, Italy or Germany (Spain a possibility) as they have the top 3 rankings at the moment based on fifa rankings and finishing spots in the last 2 tournaments. North Korea will also likely get one of them.
Aside from that we will get an average European team if we draw Brazil. If we drew Italy or Germany we may not get any other European team in the group as they try to avoid more than one team from any confederation in any group.
And the other team in the group will be from any one of the other confederations. I guess the aim for each group is to have 2 big dogs, a banana skin team and a minnow.
I wonder when fifa will announce who is in each pot because I doubt that will happen on the same day as the draw is made? Once they do that there will be some clear scenarios.
