For the last couple of seasons, Sportsfreak has brought you a weekly column with our week by week predictions for the NRL. Overall, we reckon we went pretty well in comparison with other tipsters – so in 2008, we thought it was time to put our money where our mouth is. This year, we welcome a couple of sites to Sportsfreak in the “Great NRL Intersite Tipping Challenge”. Every week we will be looking at the selections of three different sites:- Blogging it Real – a NZ based blog commenting on, well, everything really. League Freak – a terrific Australian based League site. Sportsfreak – us! After each round we will see how our respective tips went, and just to see how the “professionals” are going, have a look at how a couple of newspapers are travelling in the picking department. We will keep you updated with a weekly leaderboard so you can see exactly how it is all panning out. May the best site win! So, away we head to Round One……….. FRIDAY Roosters vs Rabbitohs Blogging it Real – Roosters by 10 ”We think the game will be won out wide and maybe, just maybe, the Roosters have an edge there.” League Freak – Rabbitohs by 7 “The Bunnies have had a longer pre-season and should be better balanced than the Roosters at this point in the season.” Sportsfreak – Roosters by 4 ”Their beefed up forward pack will be looking to have an immediate effect”. Titans vs Cowboys Blogging it Real – Cowboys by 8 ”If it was at Townsville then we'd have to pick the Cowboys, but down in the slums of the Gold Coast, we think we may just ... still pick the Cowboys” League Freak – Cowboys by 10 ”Opening a new stadium always tends to works against a side, the Cowboys will fire up in front of a big hostile crowd and win.” Sportsfreak - Titans by 1 ”The first upset of the NRL season - and there’s usually an early one in Queensland”. SATURDAY Eels vs Bulldogs Blogging it Real – Eels by 14 ”I don't give a stuff who wins as long as both sets of fans fight like they usually do to remind us all of how f*****g dumb Eels and Bulldogs fans are.” League Freak – Eels by 10 “The Eels are a more polished side and have more grunt up front. Will any of them be sober for the match though?” Sportsfreak – Eels by 12 ”The Bulldogs implosion will be complete by year’s end. Parramatta to have too much class.”
Manly vs Sharks Blogging it Real – Manly by 13 ”The Sea Eagles will have too much for a determined Sharks outfit.” League Freak – Manly by 12 “The Sharks have a few injuries and a terrible record when playing at Brookie.” Sportsfreak – Manly by 14 ”The talk going around about this being the Sharks year is ridiculous.” Knights vs Raiders Blogging it Real – Knights by 4 ”Picking a game to miss in Round 1? Make it this one.” League Freak – Knights by 12 “This one could already decide who wins the wooden spoon in 2008!” Sportsfreak – Raiders by 6 ”Wow! What a beauty for Round 1! Zzzzzz….” SUNDAY Broncos vs Penrith Blogging it Real – Panthers by 8 ”Look for Pritchard and Puletua to do some damage.” League Freak – Panthers by 4 “The Panthers have a far better and more rounded lineup, while the Broncos look like a team that needs to rebuild.” Sportsfreak – Panthers by 2 “The Mulletmen have been hard nuts to crack for the Broncos in recent seasons.” Tigers vs Dragons Blogging it Real – Tigers by 80 ”Here’s hoping anyway…..” League Freak – Dragons by 16 ”The Tigers have a few injuries and the Dragons have a few youngsters whose form will get them over the line.” Sportsfreak – Dragons by 4 ”A tough year for both teams. Tougher for the Tigers.” MONDAY Storm vs Warriors Blogging it Real – Storm by 16 ”The Warriors will be in it for 60 minutes” League Freak – Storm by 2 “This will be the toughest game of the round but the Defending Champions’ class will shine through.” Sportsfreak - Storm by 14 ”Look for the Storm to make an early statement in 2008.”
