We want the job. Again

    We want the job. Again
Posted by Sportsfreak on Tuesday, 27 October 2009

Somehow we failed to win the NZ coaching job after Bracewell walked away from his 6 trail-blazing years in charge of the national side. Strange, because we were keen to revolutionise the way things are done, and that is clearly the current meme at NZ Cricket. Nothing like a coup over a holiday weekend.

We were obviously 6th choice or worse that time round, but that’s not going to stop us having a go now. After all, we’re more cynical than your average Heat Pump Salesman, so we can spot a coup from behind better than your average party whip.

But, and this is the worrying bit, we’ve just seen the latest Terms and Conditions from NZ cricket for this new role. Is there something a bit preordained about this?

NZ Cricket Terms and Conditions for the national coaching role
Must have international captaincy experience Imagine having a coach like, say, John Buchanan who has never cut it at the top level. We tried that with Rixon, Aberhart and Moles. But now, we’re too big and flash for that.

We want a proven captain at the top level as we believe they then make the best coaches. Like Greg Chappell for example.

" We are not looking for a Prima Donna "
Must have had experience being his side’s best batsman.
3000 test runs is a preference, but what we are really looking for is someone who has topped the batting averages over a range of seasons. Call it a proven record in digging the side out of a big hole.

An extensive first class, non-international record
Not necessary. Look what happened with Moles.

Must have had experience being his side’s best bowler.
In all forms of the game, especially as a defensive bowler. This is a very important requirement when appointing the coach.

Must have international captaincy experience without a Vice Captain
A new criteria this one, bit I NZ Cricket thinks it’s really important. It’s all about ownership.

Must have selection experience.
Obviously. We don’t want a potential applicant coming into this all green.

Lets get this straight. We are looking for a true all-rounder.

Must have experience across the board in a team
We are not looking for a Prima Donna. Certainly not. Someone with experience of running the drinks trolley; for an IPL side say, teaches humility and an all-round understanding of how cricket teams work. Definitely a bonus.

Must have a beard

Must wear glasses

We are a polished shop and we involve a transparent process. Etc..
