With the stars of the Philips Championship on display, there was plenty of tall timber soaking up the sun aboard the tall ship, James Craig, when the 2006/07 Philips Championship season was officially launched on Wednesday.
NBL Commissioner Rick Burton joined with the players at the gala launch at Pyrmont in Sydney, with the Philips Championship well represented with numerous stars from around the League present including Peter Crawford (Perth), Brett Maher (Adelaide) and Anthony Stewart (Cairns) just to name a few.
Celebrity MC Mark Beretta entertained the crowd and media with Q&A’s with Sydney coach Brian Goorjian and South Dragons star Shane Heal.
The Philips Championship will sail into new waters in 2006/07 with the inclusion of the Singapore Slingers. The Slingers will be captained by former Sydney King, Ben Knight, who is excited about the coming season but is also well aware that the challenge is in front of his team.
“It going to be tough early on as a group, I think with a lot of mid-week games and then jumping on flights it will take its toll a bit but teams also have to travel up to us as well,” said Knight.
“I really hope the people of Singapore will get behind us and get the place rocking we want to see the fans come out and enjoy what we have to offer,” Knight added
All players posed for photos with the Championship trophy but struggled to remove it from the firm grip of Melbourne Tigers star Chris Anstey.
