The midfield is the key area in any soccer/football team, if you have good ball players there you get a good flow right through the whole team, a good example last year was when Hernandez & Riera were outstanding in midfield, about half way through the comp we were unbeaten for about 10 games in a row & the form team over that period, then both Hernandez & Riera got injured & the whole team fell to pieces badly… with Hernandez gone our two main midfielders this year will be Riera & McGarry, if those two don’t get injured too much we should go well.
Comp starts : Fri – 10th Oct
Phoenix v Perth Glory
Sun – 12th Oct
5pmOctober 12, 2014 at 9:35 am #15956Today { Wgtn } – 5pm
Phoenix : (from) Glen Moss (GK), Manny Muscat, Roly Bonevacia, Michael Boxall, Alex Rodriguez, Nathan Burns, Michael McGlinchey, Jeremy Brockie, Tyler Boyd, Albert Riera, Louis Fenton, Vince Lia, Ben Sigmund, Tom Doyle, Lewis Italiano (GK), Roy Krishna, Andrew Durante (c), Matthew Ridenton.
Perth Glory : (from) Danny Vukovic (GK), Jack Clisby, Brandon O’Neill, Rostyn Griffiths, Dino Djulbic, Youssouf Hersi, Andy Keogh, Nebosja Marinkovic, Richard Garcia, Diogo Ferreira, Chris Harold, Jamie MacLaren, Mitch Nichols, Jack Duncan (GK), Josh Risdon, Scott Jamieson, Michael Thwaite (c), Harry O’Brien.
October 13, 2014 at 10:29 am #15957Disorganised effort by the Phoenix & their marking on both flanks was pathetic, seriously need to get rid of some of the deadwood in defence, obviously Sigmund and Durante being the main ones.
Why was McGlinchey playing as a striker ??? when he would be much more valuable to the team as a midfielder.
Was really disappointing in the last few minutes when snail-Sigmund was too slow to get across & cover allowing them to beat us 2-1
October 22, 2014 at 8:56 pm #16021Didn’t see their last match, good to hear the Phoenix won away 2-1… was a total brain explosion from Doyle giving away one of the dumbest own goals I’ve ever seen, didn’t even look to see where our goal keeper was or think of another option, just blindly passed the ball into his own net.

October 28, 2014 at 1:28 pm #160762 wins out of 3 is a good solid start, the 2 snails in defence still worry me though, probably one of the main reasons our marking is so poor on the flanks, going well as a unit, would ever go better if McGlinchey played in the midfield & Cunningham started as a striker… Riera & McGlinchey are by far the best 2 players in the team for setting up our strikers etc, so need both of them playing in the midfield FFS!!! ???

Phoenix v Melbourne Victory
Sky Sport 1Merrick is complaining about his midfield not holding onto the ball enough, which is where the game is controlled from… well, why the hell is he playing a very creative midfielder partly as a striker & partly in midfield ??? Christ, just play him in the midfield.

November 4, 2014 at 8:06 pm #16144Well, that was a bloody rubbish performance by the Phoenix… to win the next one they’ll have to improve a fair bit in all areas, marking was poor & far too much silly loose passing.
November 8, 2014 at 9:31 am #16167Even though the Phoenix won last night 1-0 it was another poor effort, the opposition had 8 of their starting players missing… wasn’t until we put on Krishna as a striker with the pace he has in that last 15 minutes or so that the whole team started to play much better moving the ball heaps faster upfield, didn’t stuff around like they did for most of the game, still have too many slow players at the back, need more pace there.
December 2, 2014 at 1:31 pm #16353Good 5-1 win to the Phoenix over Melbourne City… defence is still a big worry, especially down the sides, bloody poor coaching by Merrick for not fixing the problem, mind-boggling stuff.

10. Western Sydney Wanderers { p7 } – 3ptsDecember 14, 2014 at 12:05 pm #16421As Merrick was saying this morning that would have to be the biggest 1-1 massacre ever, crap finishing by the Phoenix, But shockers do happen as long as it doesn’t occur too often, would of been a total embarrassment if they’d lost to the Mariners.
As said before reckon Merrick still doesn’t have the balance right… don’t rate Rodriguez, I’d drop the bloke & put McGlinchey in midfield & either play Cunningham or Boyd as a striker along side Burns & Krishna, then we’d get a lot more flow between the midfield & strikers.
No wonder McGlinchey looks like he’s caught in two minds a fair bit of the time with Merrick playing him as a striker & also having him sweeping back as a midfielder, that’s bloody ridiculous ! Christ, you play a player where you’re going to get the best out of him.

December 22, 2014 at 11:07 am #16498Phoenix played in such a negative way in the first 70 minutes you would of thought Ricki Herbert was still coaching them… wasn’t until the last 15 to 20 minutes that they started to play positively, moving forward from the back at good pace where Burns scored 2 very well taken goals to win the game.

10. Western Sydney Wanderers {p9} – 3ptsDecember 29, 2014 at 5:55 pm #16556Phoenix should of never been awarded a penalty to beat Sydney Wanderers 1-0, what a dreadful match… the Phoenix marking was awful, they just let their midfielders & strikers run free, gifting them plenty of opportunities on goal, luckily they were that useless they were unable to take advantage.
Many a time when a corner is taken the ball can go over the top etc through to the other side, so why isn’t there a Phoenix player sweeping at the back to pick up the loose ball so they can keep the pressure on ???
