Paul says:
It is a much better feeling heading into the final few weeks of the Philips Championship knowing you still have plenty to play for.
That’s the situation with the Harvey Norman NZ Breakers because we’re still in with a chance to make the Top 8 play-offs after back-to-back wins in the past week.
Last Wednesday we thrashed the Singapore Slingers in front of a boisterous crowd on the North Shore and then we traveled across the ditch to thrash the Wollongong Hawks on their home court.
To put that in perspective, we had lost to both teams twice this season and we headed into the Hawks game with just one win on the road all season.
It showed a lot of character to win those games because our opposition was as hungry to triumph as we were.
We desperately needed to beat the Slingers and Hawks because they, along with the Adelaide 36ers, now form the logjam of four teams gunning for the one remaining play-off berth – all of us with the same number of wins this season.
To leap-frog those other three teams we need to win both our remaining home matches – this Thursday against the South Dragons from Melbourne and next week against the bottom placed West Sydney Razorbacks – while striving to sneak at least one away win against the top two sides, the Brisbane Bullets and Perth Wildcats.
It’s a big ask, but if we play with the same defensive intensity that we displayed against the Hawks on the weekend we can’t be written off.
Another important factor will be the crowd support. The North Shore Events Centre has been jumping over the past fortnight and that awesome support really helps lift and drive the team.
We would like nothing better than to pay tribute to those spectators with a win – not only to keep the play-off dream alive, but to continue developing the heart and soul of our youthful club.
