A boot camp in the middle of last season proved to be a turning point for the Breakers, with the team finishing the season strongly on the back of enhanced team work and greater belief in their abilities.
This year more flexibility in the pre-season programme allowed for a similar boot camp experience before the opening match and the players had an eventful 24 hours being put through their paces by Army and Navy personnel on the Whangaparoa Penisula.
Coach Andrej Lemanis said it was a tough exercise immediately after the arduous pre-season trip to Australia, but it was superb team building.
“Lugging things around, working as a team, problem solving, brain storming. Having to find our food, pitch a tent, stay warm. Wake-ups at 2am, explosions going off all around us – it was a really useful time.”
Captain Paul Henare says the boot camp was another opportunity to gel and mix as a team following the Australia excursion.
“Last year’s boot camp was physically tough and draining, whereas this year it was more mentally challenging and tested our character.
Breakers Boot Camp 2“It would’ve been easy to take off individually and pack a sad, but we stuck together really well and toughed it out, maintaining our humour and sanity.
Breakers Boot Camp 4“I’m sure the lessons learned will shine through on the court where we’ll be toughing it out in every minute of every game to post positive results.”
