Note the slime comments on “surprise” omissions.
Only the non-selection of Vincent could be regarded such. Franklin is injured, Macca is both past it and no longer good enough and How has no discipline for the longer form of the game.
I agree with your Vincent comments, sadly it seems that the new captain is as stupid as the last when it comes to selecting his mates over superior players.
Papps selection is a f**king joke, expect him to come home with concussion after the first test, his defensive technique consists of head butting the bloody ball, if he cannot avoid the short ball on our slow tracks he has no bloody chance on the quicker Safa pitches.
I am glad to see Franklin given the flick and glad to see the inclusion of NZ quickest bowler Gillespie, big “ups” for the selection of Mills as well, anybody who is prepared to do that much work on a once diabolical action gets a big tick in my book.
The only real question I have is this, why are we forcing ourselves to play test cricket with the second best spinner just because he is captain?
Vettori is the last NZ bowler to take 10 wickets in a test, and the last NZ batsman to score a half-century in a test.
But yeah more generally his bowling at test level has been fairly suspect for years.
Mason is a complete waste of space.
I note Vincent and/or Sinclair could also have been backup keeper if the tattooed freak ever copped an injury.
As it is we have:
– No backup opener
– No backup keeper (or even a batsman who can keep a bit)
– A crapload of medium/medium fast right arm seamers
– A questionable “first” spinner
