I’ve read a lot of crap about why extreme sports are so popular over the last couple of years, but that article, and the rebellious kids angle might be onto something…
As a father of an 11-year old going on 18, I realise that traditional sports can seem a little uncool; not least because you have to wear a nerdy uniform (including long socks). He enjoys it, but there’s something constrained about it all; and he gets extra pleasure from the fact that winds me up.
My generation rebelled, but only when we got (close to) drinking age. I guess rebellion options for minors are more limited.
Don’t underestimate the fact that extreme sports have been the first to use the power of popular music too.
