Probably on a par with 2002 – opportunities missed and nothing really gelling. The only time we actually looked like a team was when down to 10 men against Portugal. Poor squad selection leaving us deficient of strikers, but hopefully the first of many tournaments for Aaron Lennon.
I wonder how Theo Walcott will remember it….
I was thinking more 1998; with the obvious comparison of the Man U sending-off while scores were tied, then the penalty exit. The difference being that the 98 team probably played better football, despite not having the same talent.
But you’re right in pointing out the common thread of the disjointed nature of the 2002 and 2006 teams. That’ll be Sven’s legacy.
BTW, I reckon England were at their best in the 5 minutes between Beckham being subbed and Rooney being sent off.
