One of the ironies of England is the one time they looked like having a good chance of winning the world cup was in 1990, when they basically stumbled into the semis despite looking very average, in part to a very favourable draw. Then played very well in the semis, but crapped out nonetheless. None of the sides since looked to be capable of getting anywhere near the title.
