Interesting points Z, and I guess you’re right about Smith; if you don’t ask you don’t receive.
But taken to its logical conclusion, I the taxpayer would end up buying Nelson, Coutts and co out of their contracts and I really don’t want to do that.
Your Brazil of world rugby analogy might be about right (there has to be a flaw in there somewhere, can’t think of it yet). But this might just be the reality of modern sport and World Cup Worship. If the Brazilians were kept at home playing for state-funded teams they wouldn’t win as many World Cups as they currently do.
In the same way, your young, skilled, fit and hungry team of the future will probably win almost all games at home in between World Cups and go pretty well when touring. But they’re unlikely to be good enough to win a World Cup.
So perhaps nothing will change after all!
