The NZ20 saga has drawn on for longer than a Peter Jackson movie.
And it’s been a really interesting exercise in a PR battle. The proponents are a well oiled and experienced outfit, and they have found plenty of useful idiots to promote their case. And of course current players have always wanted a pay rise, and will always be available to press that case.
The unseating of Scott Weenink was cynical and not a highlight in sports governance in New Zealand. It also makes finding a replacement challenging.
The fact that Weenink was gagged in replying to the allegations by the white ants in his board made it a seriously slanted landscape.
The NZ20 promotion has been slick, but also seriously short on detail. Sadly, this has never been challenged.

Where is the foreign investment coming from exactly? Stanford is still in prison, and investment from Indian tycoons has so far been proven to be tricky given this is a Players’ Association driven initiative.
Where are the top ranked overseas players going to come from given it will clash with the BBL and the South African branch of the IPL?
Why is the women’s game never mentioned?
The concept that the NZ20 needs to be prioritised over potential home international fixtures (see next year’s incoming Sri Lanka tour) needs a lot of consideration. If so, it needs to be called out.
NZ20 may well be the best option, but the lack of proper scrutiny is telling. If something seems too good to be true then ….
