As an aside, how cool is that Mexico 1970 poster?

For mine it was Beauden Barrett gathering in that perfect Ben Smith kick through in the last minute of the RWC Final after racing past all those Easter Island-looking Wallaby statues. As that beautiful Gilbert ball sat up for him it was like a visual metaphor for gathering in the Cup itself… “Yeeeeesssss, gotcha!!” What a way to finish!!
After 48 long years, with their best players taken away from them for a large part of the season, and up against The Filth in final. This….

In a RWC that panned out pretty well in the end the magic moment has to be Japan’s try to win that epic encounter with South Africa. By any measure the biggest upset in the history of the RWC and arguably in the history of International Rugby. OK, the tier 2/3 nations are much improved and far more organised than previously but Japan’s win was not only heroic but thoroughly warranted on the day. A footballing apology? NZ beating Spain at the FIFA WC in 2018. Maybe…
Lot to choose from with the bus steamrolling the French, the Japanese upsetting the Boks and the ABs winning the WC. For me it would be the Canes win, and particular Nonu’s performance off the bench, over the highlanders after hearing of Jerry Collins death. Nonu, the Unofficial World Player of the Year’s 1st try was Collins-esque, the second showed his rediscovered turn of pace. When Nonu got up after scoring the first I was both jumping in jubilation and fighting back the tears thinking about what it meant to him. What a way to honour their fallen comrade.
So many great moments to choose from.
For me my favourite moment was the week the Hurricanes captured the nation (along with the Highlanders).
Hosting the Final for the first time (nobody remembers their previous final or saw it for that matter) after years of hope and promise. Fair to say the life of a Canes fan has been hard yakka.
Not only did they make the sports news every night, front page and back page of the local paper THEY WERE THE FIRST ITEM ON THE NEWS! The buzz about the game will be remembered for the ticketing, for the first time Canes tickets were as rare as hens teeth and the black market was busy.
The game itself was a perfect final, the buzz at the game was electric, a sea of flags greeted the players and stayed long after the final whistle. As dissapointing as the result was it showed what crowds bring to the game, the atsmosphere was incredible and reminded us why getting to the game is so important.
Canes fans did not have to wait long before we saw the boys light up again. Twickenham provided us with 3 tries worthy of any highlights reel. Milner-skudder, Nonu and Beaudy reminded us of a great CANES year!
CANES CANES CANES!!!
Hands down, my favourite rugby moment of 2015 was when Jerome, Dan, Liam, Ma’a & SBW flew into Wellingtom and then went straight to Jerry’s resting place with the Webb Ellus Cup. They spent some time there talking and reflecting, and took a few photos. The photos that were shared filled the hearts of rugby lovers everywhere, and especially me. I was reduced to tears by the gesture. The All Black brotherhood stands for many things, but ultimately they stand for love of the game, for each other, for family, and for their fans.
My favourite moment, getting out from behind the couch when Canterbury finally got the ball out to secure the win in the final against Auckland!
It’s hard to top winning the World Cup back to back. Nonu’s try was an absolute blinder, and the quality of rugby throughout – superb. But my favourite rugby moment of 2015 came after the win, and it came from the Aussies. Stephen Moore’s interview. Gracious, obviously disappointed, no excuses. You know what? I think we would have been the same.
And that’s the spirit sport should be played in. Hard fought on the field, gracious off it, win or lose. Not the sledging of the Aussie cricketers, not the putting down of your opponents in the press before hand that we too often see. Mutual respect, play it hard on the field, and leave it all out there. And that’s what made the final for me.
