Tossers
1Updated as at 20 Feb 2016. On completion of McCullum’s career
There has been a lot of talk over the last few days over where Brendon McCullum stands in the list of New Zealand captains and their success rate at the toss.
It is a ridiculous argument of course but cricket, and test cricket in particular, is heavily reliant on the outcome of the toss.
So, for reference, here is the record of New Zealand captains (min 10 tests) and how they’ve gone at the toss. Note how the guy at the top spent years associated with setting TAB odds.
Captain | Tests | Wins | Percentage |
KR Rutherford | 18 | 12 | 67% |
LRPL Taylor | 13 | 8 | 62% |
JG Wright | 14 | 8 | 57% |
GP Howarth | 30 | 17 | 57% |
JV Coney | 15 | 8 | 53% |
DL Vettori | 32 | 17 | 53% |
GT Dowling | 19 | 10 | 53% |
JR Reid | 34 | 17 | 50% |
MD Crowe | 16 | 8 | 50% |
LK Germon | 12 | 6 | 50% |
SP Fleming | 80 | 37 | 46% |
MG Burgess | 10 | 4 | 40% |
BB McCullum | 31 | 12 | 39% |
BE Congdon | 17 | 4 | 24% |
GM Turner | 10 | 2 | 20% |
It is a slightly different story if you only look at tosses away from home where they have called incorrectly rather then just passively watching someone else call correctly.
McCullum is not that bad when away from home at 56%. Turner captained 5 tests away and did not win a toss in any of them.
